General Usage

If in distress, these signs should be drawn on the ground for search & rescue craft/parties.
The sign should be at least 10 meters square. The characters should be oriented in a north-south fashion.
On snow, the sign should be dug as a trench or raised so as to be readable through shading.

Clothing and equipment should be used if physical strength is insufficient. Grass, trees, or stones should be used if available nearby.

In a rescue operation, aircraft may use loudspeakers and communication tubes to contact parties at ground level, but the person in distress will find it difficult to reply. However, knowing these reply methods can enable proper rescue.
