The Presage Sharp Edged Series moves ahead with a new case, a new caliber and new designs.

The Asanoha pattern dials are in colors that evoke the traditions of Japan.

Since its creation just two years ago, the Presage Sharp Edged Series has quickly established a place in the world of fine watches for its combination of traditional mechanical watchmaking with a distinctively modern Japanese style. It offers the refinement of traditional Japanese aesthetics with strong, angular case designs. For 2022, the collection expands with five new watches, each of which brings a new aspect of Seiko’s mechanical watchmaking to the fore and offers a new perspective on the culture of Japan. One is a limited edition GMT, two feature a new open heart movement and two offer a multi-hand dial with power reserve, day and date displays.

Like all the existing watches in this series, the dials of these new additions feature the Asanoha, or hemp leaf, pattern that has been used in Japanese fabrics ever since the Heian period over a thousand years ago. This pattern owes its long-lasting popularity to the fact that the Asanoha plant has always been seen in Japan as a symbol of health and vitality thanks to its robust and fast-growing nature.

A GMT limited edition

The dial is in a shade of blue used by Ukiyoe artists to depict Mt Fuji in summer.

Caliber 6R64 GMT is perfectly suited to the character of the Sharp Edged Series design. The wide dial opening allows the time of day, GMT function, power reserve and date to be read at a glance and the sharp precision of the hands is echoed in the powerfully three-dimensional indexes. The dial’s rich texture is complemented by the depth of its color, a blue that Ukiyoe artists over the centuries made famous in images of Mt Fuji in high summer. The GMT display ring shares the same blue and is in ceramic.

This Presage watch is offered as a limited edition of 900 and will be available in July at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide.

A new case design

The new case has a slim, elegant profile.

The other four new watches in the 2022 Sharp Edged Series all share a new case design. While it retains all the strength and angularity that gives the series its distinctive look, there is a new facet with a mirror finish between the top and side surfaces that adds a new sparkle to the watch. The elegance of the new design is further enhanced by the inward tapering of the case.

A new open heart movement and a first for the series

The rich depth of the dial is created by the use of three different layers in its construction.

Two of the new creations are powered by Caliber 6R38, which is a new addition to the 6R family of movements. It is specially adapted so as to allow the wearer to see the beat of the escapement through the opening at the 9 o’clock position. Furthermore, it offers a power reserve of 70 hours.

The other two new timepieces feature Caliber 6R21 which has day, date and power reserve indicators at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions respectively. This is the first appearance of this multi-hand movement in the Sharp Edged Series.

Each of the four dials is in a different traditional Japanese color. Shironeri, the white of unbleached silk and Aisumi, the blue of indigo for are used in the open heart watches. Geppaku, the white of the full moon, is used in one of the two multi-hand creations while the sub-dials of the other are in Kuritobi, the color of the black kite.

All four new creations will be available in June at the Seiko Boutiques and selected retail partners worldwide.
