What brought about the modern revival of King Seiko? And what is the best way to wear a King Seiko in the modern era? For the first in our series of interviews showcasing the inspiration, background and stylistic decisions behind the latest iteration of King Seiko, we spoke with Seiko Watch designer Takuya Matsumoto. The interview covers the story behind the 2022 revival of the King Seiko brand, the underlying design philosophy, and some of the key considerations for the development team tasked with preserving the timeless style of the original.

The watch design team spent considerable time pondering the underlying motivation for the revival of this iconic brand. We eventually came up with the concept of the "Newest Classic," which speaks to the idea of a modern interpretation that retains the classical appeal.
King Seiko is unequivocally a Tokyo creation, conceived and created in the nation's capital. In our quest to deliver a quality timepiece, our team paid homage to the quintessential essence of iki, or “chic,” styling inherited from Edo-era Tokyo, as well as the key design principles that motivated the 1960s designers. Rather than aiming for a spectacular product, the team concentrated on the fundamentals: a watch that is both useful and practical, easy to read, sized to fit snugly on the wrist, and above all comfortable. To this end, the aim was to achieve a sensible balance between the proportions of the watch case, hands and indices. The simplicity of the design, with wastage reduced to a minimum, serves to enhance the functionality and the beauty of the profile.
The original King Seiko was created during a period of economic growth in Japan, at a time when the entire nation seemed to be teeming with activity, not just in industry but in all aspects of life. This led to a heightened emphasis on timeliness, with daily schedules and meeting arrangements seen as increasingly important, and the watch tied in perfectly with that sentiment. Thus, the original King Seiko was designed to serve as an accurate and reliable timepiece for the modern era. And the relaunched King Seiko is proud to carry on that tradition.
The King Seiko brand conveys a timeless sense of value that shows no sign of waning through the years, with a bold, assertive design that belies the gentle beauty within.
At one stage during discussions of the King Seiko relaunch, there was talk of moving to a completely new design. But it was eventually decided that the new model should strive to preserve the appeal of the original from 60 years ago—particularly the stylistic elements—while utilizing the latest technology to further enhance the product offering.
The external finishes in particular have benefited significantly from the application of modern technology. For instance, we were able to render the box-profile watch glass of the second-generation KSK using sapphire glass in place of the original acrylic.
Sapphire glass is incredibly tough and scratch-resistant, and although the production process is more exacting, it was deemed worthwhile as a means of improving upon the original without compromising the classic look and feel. Improvements in machining technology also enabled us to create a bracelet that was both stylish and comfortable, with a solid but not heavy feel.
While the technology has certainly improved over the last 60 years, we felt it was important to stay true to the original design, in particular, the key notion of enduring style that never loses relevance. The key development principles for the newly reborn King Seiko were predicated on the universality of good design that survives in the face of fashion fads and trends, in combination with an enhanced user experience and long-lasting durability.
For many people, of course, the wristwatch also serves as a fashion accessory. The linear styling of the second-generation KSK conveys a modernity commensurate with life in the city, and as such is the perfect complement to a suit. Although business wear in the modern era tends toward a more casual look, as exemplified by matching sets, in my opinion King Seiko still imparts a sense of subdued elegance.
The design elements employed in the watch dial of the latest King Seiko preserve the core tenets of the brand concept while paying homage to the Edo-era chic that I mentioned earlier. The dial, for example, is inspired by the flower of the Japanese wisteria found at Kameido Tenjin Shrine, right near the birthplace of the King Seiko brand, while the dial is a relief rendering of the traditional cut glass pattern known as kikutsunagi.
The new models come with a wide choice of leather straps to suit any outfit. There are many ways to coordinate the strap with your outfit. You might choose a watch dial and leather strap to match the color of your jacket, for instance, or use a completely different color to create an accent, like you do with a tie.
Personally, I prefer to go for the classic look by matching a vintage-style leather strap with a plain-colored watch dial. The leather straps are carefully crafted to develop an attractive patina over time.
The striking colors of King Seiko never fade, even after half a century, thus providing enduring appeal over the years.
With a huge range of watch dials and leather straps to choose from, King Seiko can be configured in a variety of stylish and casual combinations to suit your lifestyle. "The King Seiko design goes with any type of outfit," says Matsumoto.
Matsumoto recommends the SJE091 with black dial. A key feature is the angular tri-cut hour and minute hands that produce delightful reflections, along with the handsome dial that gives off a superb navy-blue hue when the light hits it at a certain angle. "What makes King Seiko so fascinating is the appearance of simplicity that belies the painstaking craftsmanship and attention to detail," says Matsumoto.
